Abstract

The purpose of the present thesis is to tabulate, classify, and analyze the number of articles on methods of teaching found in The Grade Teacher during a five year period, September 1947 through June 1952.

The Grade Teacher is one of the most widely read professional magazines. Since its publication in 1883 it has aimed to provide teachers with pedagogical helps and inspirational assistance. When trends in teaching took a new turn as they did with the advent .of the unit method of instruction The Grade Teacher became a clearing house for the distribution of helpful material. It became the medium through which experimental studies were published and classroom research was encouraged. The writer has been vitally interested in this magazine for many years and her knowledge of its contents led to the present investigation. The purpose of the present thesis is to tabulate, classify, and analyze the number of articles on methods of teaching found in The Grade Teacher during a five year period, September 1947 through June 1952. The documentary frequency method of research was the one most suited to this type of investigation. All the issues of The Grade Teacher from this five year period were examined and the number of articles dealing with pedagogy or methods of teaching were selected. By methods of teaching is meant any article that describes or suggests better ways of presenting any aspect of the elementary school curriculum. After getting the numerical picture, the type of article was noted, the subject matter, and the authorship. The value of this study lies in the fact that the articles written during the period were assembled, classified, and made readily accessible to supervisors and teachers who wish to recommend special articles to teachers. It also shows whether there has been a consistent interest in any one subject over the period of five years and whether the authorship shows that specialists of elementary education have taken the lead in the publication of articles.
